HOW TO PRAY THE HOLY ROSARY

Visit Lumen Verum Apologetics for the full page!

How to pray the Rosary
While holding the crucifix make the Sign of the Cross. and then recite the Apostles Creed.
Recite the Our Father on the first large bead.
Recite a Hail Mary for an increase of faith, hope and charity on each of the three small beads.
Recite the Glory Be to the Father on the next large bead.
Recite the Fatima Prayer "O my Jesus" on the large bead.
Recall the first Rosary Mystery and recite the Our Father on the large bead.
On each of the adjacent ten small beads (also refered to as a decade) recite a Hail Mary while reflecting on the mystery.
On the next large bead, recite the Glory Be to the Father, the Fatima prayer.
Each succeeding decade is prayed in a similar manner by recalling the appropriate mystery, reciting the Our Father, ten Hail Marys, the Glory Be to the Father, and the Fatima prayer while reflecting on the mystery.
When the fifth mystery is completed, the Rosary is Customarily concluded with the Hail Holy Queen, and the Sign of the Cross.

Archbishop Fulton Sheen said, "The rosary is the book of the blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the simple, which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next. The power of the rosary is beyond description."

How To Pray the Rosary:

While the rosary and the indulgences attached to it by the Church essentially concerns the decades and the meditation upon the mysteries only, the following is a customary way of preparing for the rosary and concluding it.

1. Preparation

Start by making the sign of the Cross:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Then recite the Apostle's Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ,
His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Sprit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

Then say 1 Our Father, 3 Hail Marys (for the virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity) and then 1 Glory Be:

Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of death. Amen.

GLORY BE to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen.

2. The Rosary Proper

The Rosary is essentially the decades and their associated mysteries, and only these must be prayed to "pray the rosary", either in satisfaction of Our Lady's requests, or, to gain the indulgences attached to praying the rosary.

The traditional Rosary is divided into three parts, each having five mysteries: Glorious, Joyful and Sorrowful. In his apostolic letter The Rosary of the Virgin Mary, Pope John Paul II proposed a new set of mysteries, which he called the Luminous, and which concern the period of the public life of Our Lord. For those who wish to say all 20 decades at once during the course of a day, they may be said in the following order: Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious.

For those who wish to say only 5 decades per day, the Holy Father proposed the following schedule:

Monday

Tuesday

Wednesday

Thursday

Friday

Saturday

Sunday

Joyful

Sorrowful

Glorious

Luminous

Sorrowful

Joyful

Glorious

For those who prefer to follow the traditional order of the days it is:

Monday

Tuesday

Wednesday

Thursday

Friday

Saturday

Sunday

Joyful

Sorrowful

Glorious

Joyful

Sorrowful

Glorious

Glorious

While meditating on the Mysteries, recite:

One Our Father (large beads), 10 Hail Marys (small beads) and 1 Glory Be (before the next large bead) to make a complete decade of the rosary.

After each decade the Fátima Prayer may also be said (Pope Pius XII).

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy.

3. Concluding Prayers

After the completion of five mysteries (5 decades), or 15 or 20, the following is customarily said:

Hail Holy Queen (or Salve Regina may be sung)

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

(Verse) Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.

(Response) That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Rosary Prayer

(Verse) Let us pray,

(Response) O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation. Grant, we beseech Thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

4. For the Intentions of the Holy Father

Catholics who say the rosary in a group, or, individually before the Blessed Sacrament,
may gain a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions, which includes prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father.

For the intentions of the Holy Father.

Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be.

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Apostolic Letter on New Luminous Mysteries

Introduction

The Rosary is divided into five decades. Each decade represents a mystery or event in the life of Jesus. There are four sets of "Mysteries of the Rosary" (Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious). These four "Mysteries of the Rosary" therefore contain, a total of twenty mysteries. The Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries are then said on specific days of the week (see each set of mysteries below). During private recitation of the Rosary, each decade requires devout meditation on a specific mystery. Public recitation of the Rosary (two or more people), requires a leader to announce each of the mysteries before the decade, and start each prayer (see "The Family Rosary" below).

The Apostle's Creed is said on the Crucifix; the Our Father is said on each of the Large Beads; the Hail Mary is said on each of the Small Beads; the Glory Be after the three Hail Mary's at the beginning of the Rosary, and after each decade of Small Beads. In June 13, 1917, Our Lady asked that an additional prayer be added after each decade of the Rosary (see prayers at the end of this document). It is a prayer of forgiveness to Jesus and is said following the Glory Be after each decade only.

Prayers of the Rosary

Prayer Before The Rosary

Queen of the Holy Rosary, you have designed to come to Fatima and Medjugorje, to reveal to the three shepherd children and six visionaries, the treasures of grace hidden in the Rosary. Inspire my heart with a sincere love of this devotion, in order that by meditating on the Mysteries of our Redemption which are recalled in it, I may obtain peace for the world, the conversion of sinners, and the favor which I ask of you in this Rosary (Mention your request). I ask it for the greater glory of God, for your own honor, and for the good of souls, especially for my own. Amen.

The Our Father:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Hail Mary:

Hail Mary, full of grace! the Lord is with thee; blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory be to the Father:

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Prayer to Jesus Requested By Our Lady

O My Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, take all souls to Heaven, and help especially those most in need of Your mercy.

The Apostles' Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son, Our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Hail Holy Queen:

Hail! Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, O most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy towards us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement! O loving! O sweet Virgin Mary!

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Prayer After The Rosary

O God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life, death and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech Thee, that, meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rosary Novenas

Religious devotion, public or private, for the duration of nine days to gain special graces, is called a Novena. Those who perform it with a lively hope of having their request granted, and with perfect faith and resignation if it be refused, may be assured that Christ will grant some grace or blessing. This requires an understanding that in His infinite wisdom and mercy, He may refuse the particular favor which is requested.

Novenas originated in imitation of the Apostles who were gathered together in prayer for nine days from the time of Our Lord's Ascension (to Heaven) until Pentecost Sunday (the descent of the Holy Spirit).

This practice of saying the Rosary nine times in the form of the Rosary Novena in petition or thanksgiving, is another way of heeding Our Lady's request to Pray the Rosary.

The 54 Day Novena Devotion which originated in 1884 at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompei, consists of the daily recitation of five decades of the Rosary (one complete Mystery: Joyful, Sorrowful, or Glorious) for twenty-seven days in petition and five decades for twenty-seven additional days in thanksgiving. You will actually be making three Novenas in petition for a particular favor and three Novenas in thanksgiving for a particular favor.

1st day say the 5 Joyful Mysteries
2nd day say the 5 Luminous Mysteries
3rd day say the 5 Sorrowful Mysteries
4th day say the 5 Glorious Mysteries
5th day begin again the 5 Joyful Mysteries, etc.

The Family Rosary

The Family That Prays Together... Stays Together.

The family Rosary is the Rosary recited aloud together, by as many of the family and their friends as can be present. Any family (two or more people) may say the Family Rosary in any suitable place and at any time.

A leader says aloud the first part of each prayer; a second person or group of persons answers aloud the second part of the prayer.

To begin the Family Rosary, all hold the Crucifix of their Rosary in the right hand and make the Sign of the Cross.

The leader begins the Apostles' Creed and proceeds through the rest of the Rosary as shown on Page 2. The leader announces the Mystery before each decade. Five decades (one complete Mystery: Joyful, Sorrowful, or Glorious) should be recited each day.

The Five First Saturdays

Mary's Great Promise at Fatima -

The Five First Saturdays are intended to honor and to make reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for all the blasphemes and ingratitude of men.

This devotion and the wonderful promises connected with it were revealed by the Blessed Virgin at Fatima, a small village in Portugal. Our lady appeared to three children there in 1917, and one of the little girls, Lucy, tells us that Our Lady said:

I promise to help at the hour of death, with the graces needed for salvation, whoever on the First Saturday of five consecutive months shall:

1. Confess and Receive Communion.

2. Recite five decades of the Rosary (Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, or Glorious Mysteries)

3. Keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.

Subject: The Way Forward #4
The Way Forward #4

October 1, 2007

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Grace and peace from our Lord Jesus!

Much has happened in the past month. The restoration movement continues to pick up momentum. In the Philippine provinces and in the different countries where the movement has been started, a majority of the brethren are going with us. We simply present the truth and make the brethren aware of the issues, and without any intimidation or coercion, and oftentimes even without any invitation, many are opting to be with the true and restored CFC, which is CFC-FFL.

The other side has accused us of sheep stealing. That is nonsense. The sheep belong to the Lord, and we ourselves are part of His sheepfold. As we have said before, we are CFC. We have not left the spiritual body that is CFC. We in fact have a greater right to be CFC than those who have veered away from God's call to CFC. And it is our responsibility to see to it that the Lord's sheep have the same opportunity we have to be in the right place. It is the individual decision of every CFC member to decide where his heart brings him, and not be dictated to by anyone. Be assured that we in CFC-FFL will not abandon you.

I had also suggested to quite a few countries that the way to keep themselves united is to insulate themselves from the conflict in Manila. However, the other side has not cooperated in this. In fact, they are actively moving to take control of the different countries. As such, the need now is to insulate the different CFC countries from the veering away from our original charism that is represented by CFC-GK under the Int'l Council. The almost total focus on the work of nation building in the Philippines, together with the concentration of much of our global resources on this, is not to the interest of our global family. I know that the interest of our brethren globally is evangelization and family life renewal. And this is what CFC-FFL wants to restore.

As such, I invite our CFC brethren throughout the world ..... align yourselves with us. For our brethren in the Philippine provinces, consider starting your restoration movements. Since generally your top leadership has kept the issues from you and have decided on your behalf to align your province with CFC-GK, you may think that you may be the only one for restoration. You will be pleasantly surprised. Based on what we have experienced so far, there will be many of you, even a majority, whose heart will be for CFC-FFL. Contact and network with them. Do not be afraid. In due time we will visit you for a restoration assembly. For our brethren in other countries, get in touch with us and we will integrate you in the restoration loop. Then we can look to arranging a pastoral visit at the opportune time. Together as one global family in CFC-FFL, we can all look forward to a future full of hope, as we restore CFC's original charism.

I would like to inform you of our theme for 2008. It is from the book of Zephaniah. Our theme is "Our joy in Christ," taken from Zephaniah 3:17. Lamentations has been for us a journey of hope and joy. This year we persevered in hope. Next year we fully express our joy.

God bless you.

In the service of Christ,

Frank Padilla

P.S. We find that many brethren who fell away in the last few years are now excited to come back to CFC-FFL. They look with anticipation to the restored CFC. I suggest the rest of the year is a good time to focus on bringing old members back, without holding back of course on our ongoing evangelization.

P.P.S. For more info on the issues, please go to our website <>. You may freely disseminate these materials to others.

"For to me life is Christ, and death is gain." (Phil 1:21)

  • Let us fervently ask our Lord Jesus Christ to be always in the center of our family. Let us pray for couples who are struggling with their relationship and are always being attack by the evil one to keep them away from fulfilling their covenant.
MARITAL PROBLEMS

God sets the solitary in families; He brings out those who are bound into prosperity.
- Psalm 68:61

"Love... love... till it hurts." If this be the golden rule in for all kind of relationships in a marriage, then there would be no room for misunderstanding. Total acceptance by both the partners is the first step in trying to understand each other. Acceptance will help nurture 'sacrificial Spirit', which will make the bond stronger. May be many a time we have tried doing this but failed, that is why it is very important to seek the Lord's help and mercies. If you are going through a rough phase in your married life, do not worry make a beginning here by saying these prayers with us. God will be more than happy to help you, because He desires our well-being.

MISUNDERSTANDING BETWEEN HUSBAND AND WIFE

Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?
Amos 3:3

Loving Lord!

You know the path of agony I am undergoing because of disharmony in my married life. You, Yourself instituted marriage since You found that it is not good for man to be alone. I believe that You have given me this partner.

Lord! The Scripture says that a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Come and be in our midst Lord for You alone can make two hearts understand each other. You are the Prince of peace and You are able to change any bitter situation in my life. Father! It is Your will that we should lead a happy and prosperous life. So hear my cry O God Fill both of us with more love and understanding for each other and bring unity and harmony between us.

Forgive me for the hurts I carry against my spouse. Help me to be more understanding to my partner's needs and feelings. Grant me wisdom to deal with this situation so that I can build up my house for Your glory. Thank You for Your peace O Lord. In Jesus' name I pray.

Amen.
