Putting the Wheels of Change in Motion
It was a scene unimaginable just a decade ago: a hundred wooden bicycles clambering across Rwanda’s rocky hillsides as cyclists participated in a race – for fun. The riders were neither fleeing danger, nor running for their lives. Instead, they were celebrating a renewed sense of hope.
In 1995, things were different. The country’s Karongi Stadium was a place of tragedy and suffering where 800,000 Rwandas were slaughtered in a genocidal war led by the government’s armed forces.
Today, Project Rwanda, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization, organizes events like the bike race to raise awareness of the country’s past while pointing toward a happier future by attracting investment and tourism.
Even out of the deepest human suffering, hope can emerge. With God, all things are possible.
Hope does not disappoint us. (Romans 5:5)
Alleviate suffering, God of mercy.
